Let’s Go Fly A Kite – Zilker Kite Fest 2014

Get ready for the skies to be alive with the sight of kites!   This Sunday (March 2nd) will be the 86th annual Zilker Kite Festival, The oldest kite festival in the nation.

5756624357_b2b6946ecb_oSpringtime in Austin means festivals, and this Sunday is one of our favorites.  The Shannon Schmitz Group is excited about the 86th annual Zilker Kite Festival, one of the many festivals that make 78704 one of the hottest areas in Austin Real Estate.  The Hip Zip will play host to thousands of kite enthusiasts and children of all ages for what is the nation’s oldest kite festival.

5757167588_04eb7d348b_oOriginally started in 1928, the Zilker Kite Festival has grown to become the unofficial kick off to spring in Austin.  With dozens of trophies to be awarded, a fifty-yard dash for the kids, and true to any festival in Austin, – plenty of vendors on hand – there will be something for everyone at Zilker park this Sunday.  Be careful though, with so many heads in the clouds it can easily become the “Lose your child Festival” as our own Shannon T. Schmitz once called it, so make sure to keep close tabs on the little ones (plenty of kite string available if this becomes a problem).

Interested in trying to bring home the gold?  All entries must be homemade and there are both youth and adult categories.  Here are some tips to how to build a better kite.   If you want to win the fifty-yard dash, we have 4 words for you…eye of the tiger…oh, and be under the age of twelve.  However, if you just want to come fly a kite, you will be in good company.

5757172730_0db617e290_oEven those who don’t want to participate can enjoy the Zilker Kite Festival.  The skies are literally dancing with the wind, so throwing down a blanket and watching the spectacle is sometimes the most enjoyable part. Visit the vendors and grab a bite, or if you are lucky enough to live in 78704, like Morgan Smith, stroll down to the park with a picnic lunch and try to count the number of lost kites.

So if anyone says to you, “Go fly a kite!” in the next few days, don’t get mad, but take their advice and enjoy one of the corner stones of Austin’s festival Season.   Maybe you will win, maybe you will grow a lifelong love of kites, and if you find yourself needing to be closer to the hub of the Austin Festival scene, Morgan Smith can show you some secret listings in the 78704 that you might not otherwise find.
