The Ann and Roy Butler Hike & Bike Trail is a path through the heart of Austin encircling Lady Bird Lake and bringing Austinites and visitors together in a beautiful, natural setting for exercise, events and community fellowship. The Shannon Schmitz Group is proud to be a Founding Member of the Cypress Circle for the Trail Foundation, which partners with the City of Austin to protect the Butler Trail.
The Butler Hike & Bike Trail is one of the many reasons why we love Austin! The Trail Foundation’s mission is to protect and enhance the Butler Trail, to see that work continues and the trail exists for future generations to enjoy. The Foundation exists because the city’s budget alone cannot cover the expanding costs of the Trail. The foundation works in tandem with the Parks and Recreation Department to close the gap between what the city provides and what the trail requires.
Originally the Town Lake Trail, work began on a pretty dismal-looking, flood-damaged lakefront in the 1970’s due to a civic effort by the Citizens Committee for a More Beautiful Town Lake and its Honorary Chairwoman, Lady Bird Johnson. The original committee was comprised of illustrious Austinites like Les Gage, Ann Butler, Carolyn Curtis, Emma Long, Betty Wilson, and Jim Pfluger. The group set out to create a natural oasis within the city – a network of trails and green spaces that could be enjoyed by all. Town Lake was renamed Lady Bird Lake in honor of the First Lady after her death in 2007.
The look and feel of the Trail were actually inspired by the path along the Thames in London. Lady Bird Johnson was visiting London when Mayor Roy Butler and Ann Butler met with her to discuss the Town Lake beautification project. Mrs. Johnson looked from her balcony overlooking the Thames and wondered if they could create such a space in Austin.
From the beginning, the Trail has been fostered by the people whose lives are enhanced by it. Each trail project, beautification effort, event or improvement has been the direct result of hard work by individuals, families and businesses who care. Today, the Butler Hike & Bike Trail sees 1.5 million visits per year – about 30,000 people every day. The Shannon Schmitz Group is proud to be a Founding Member of the Trail Foundation’s Cypress Circle. Cypress Circle members are a group of individuals, businesses and community leaders who wish to sustain The Butler Trail and secure its future for generations to come.
